From prompt to result

Need help with your homework? AI to the rescue! Of course, you too need training in order to learn new things, so if your teacher says that you’re not allowed to use AI for certain assignments, don’t do so. If it is allowed, though, generative AI can definitely help you.

Generative AI is AI that can create something new, such as images, videos, music or texts. For example:

Prompt: ‘No problem!’

There are several ways of converting these kinds of prompts into images, text or songs. Here are a few of them.

With GANs

Game

Suppose you and your friend play several games against each other. You try to outsmart each other each time. The result is that you make each other better and better. Win-win.

A GAN – a Generative Adversarial Network to give it its complete name – is just the same. The only difference is that it’s not you and your friend, but two AI models competing against each other: the GENERATOR and the DISCRIMINATOR. The first AI model creates images. These fake AI images are mixed with genuine images. Then, the second AI model tries to spot the AI images.

With diffusion models

Can you see an animal in this cloud? A white rabbit, perhaps?

It’s a random cloud, yet you create an image from it in your mind. A diffusion model can do something similar, except not with clouds, but with noise. It converts noise step by step into an image, based on a prompt. For instance...

With LLMs

ChatGPT and others

You’ve probably heard of ChatGPT. It’s an example of a large language model (LLM).

Models like this are based on “transformers”: not cars that can turn into robots, but a kind of neural network that’s really good at predicting the next word in a text. It knows what to look for in a text, analyses the possibilities for the next word and chooses one of the likeliest.

If a computer can understand and process human language, and can therefore “read” it, this is called Natural Language Processing or NLP.
