How does the exhibit work?
Can you see the blades turning? This creates a hologram.
What is the science behind it?
A hologram looks just like a real object, but it is actually made of light. A lot of holograms are made with heavy projectors. But there is an alternative: LED rods. You wouldn't say it, but if you turn this off, all you see are two crossed bars with LED lights.
By rotating it very quickly and lighting the LED lights at the right times in the right colours, you see moving images, seemingly in 3D.
You can compare it to a torch. If you turn a torch around quickly in the dark, you will see a circle. If you turn the torch off and on quickly, you would see dots in the sky. Now imagine 100 torches spinning and turning on and off at the same time. Then you get an image just floating around in the air.
This system is cheaper and more flexible than many other hologram techniques. So, when you think: everything already exists, know that you can always make it better!
Hologram zoo
In Australia, you can visit a very special zoo: the 'Hologram Zoo'. You won't see any real animals there, but dozens of holograms of animals. From dinosaurs to gorillas, all created with laser light. Would you like to visit such a zoo? Why or why not?
Hologram concerts
Deceased artists still giving a concert: it can be done! By displaying them as holograms, they seem to be singing and dancing on stage just for real. A few years ago, you could see Whitney Houston perform virtually this way.
"And IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII will always love youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu"
A concert by a living person is also possible, of course. Like in this picture (by MCST Korea). Here you can see a hologram of the artist Psy performing his song Gangnam Style.
