Hydrogen rocket
Badge for this exhibit
Rocket badge
How does the exhibit work?
Turn the green wheel until all lights come on. This may take a while. Keep turning patiently. Press the green button. Don't flinch. The rocket will be launched.
What is the science behind it?
Just turn it! By turning you make electricity. This splits water into 2 types of gas: hydrogen and oxygen. If you press the green button, the gases are mixed and ignited. BANG! The rocket flies into the air.
Real rockets also sometimes use hydrogen as fuel. When launching, liquid hydrogen and oxygen are pumped to the engines. There they evaporate and ignite. That provides enough power to shoot the rocket into space.
Educational material (2nd grade secondary school)
Have you always been fascinated by space and what is involved in taking a space journey? Then the STEM project 'Weg naar Mars' is definitely for you!Take a look at www.brightbib.be.
Hydrogen for ships
There are already ships that run on hydrogen. In the Port of Antwerp there is even a real hydrogen filling station.
The advantage of hydrogen as a fuel? No harmful substances are released during combustion. So, better for the environment and the climate!
